Despite a long history of talking himself into trouble, Jeremy Clarkson can’t seem to resist prompting complaints, with his latest outburst attacking whiplash claimants:

‘Whiplash isn’t an injury, it’s insurance fraud,’ blurted Clarkson on last Sundays episode of Top Gear.

But having your head suddenly jolted backwards and forwards or forcibly rotated in a road traffic accident is no laughing matter. Damage to the neck muscles and ligaments such as stretching and tearing can occur and in more severe cases, damage to the spine or spinal cord

“With his flippant comments, poking fun at the injured party, Clarkson dismisses any genuine claims, debasing both the nature and impact of the injury,” says Robin Torr, Head of Personal Injury at Abacus Solicitors.

At Abacus Solicitors, our Personal Injury team helps innocent victims of car accidents large and small recover £000s in compensation each year. Clarkson has previously sparked outrage with his many candid opinions.

He has:

  •  Joked about the deaths of 23 Chinese cockle-pickers in Morecambe.
  • Suggested striking public sector workers should be ‘taken outside in front of their families and shot.’
  • Mocked Korean automobile workers for ‘eating dogs.’
  • Branded BMW ‘Nazis.’
  • Claimed that babies ‘belong in the hold’ on British Airways flights.
  • Cracked a joke about the Stuart Hall scandal,  tweeting: ‘Can I just say that I’ve worked at the BBC for 24 years and in all that time no-one has ever tried to put his finger in my bottom.’
  • In 2010 an audience member told him she was American during an episode of Top Gear, to which he replied: ‘You can’t be, you’re nowhere near fat enough.’
  • Described former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who is blind in one eye, as a ‘one-eyed Scottish idiot’ in 2009.
  • While driving a truck in 2008 he made a joke about lorry drivers murdering prostitutes, saying: ‘You’ve got to change gear, change gear, change gear, check mirror… murder a prostitute. Change gear, change gear, murder. That’s a lot of effort in a day.’
  • After Top gear co-host Richard Hammond described Mexicans as being ‘feckless’ and ‘lazy’ in 2011, Clarkson joked that Mexico wouldn’t complain as the country’s UK ambassador would be asleep in front of the TV. He wasn’t, and a complaint was issued.
  • In July 2008 The presenter was censured by the BBC’s governing body for glamorising drink-driving after he was filmed sipping on a gin and tonic behind the wheel of a pickup truck.
