A workman who fell through the roof of an industrial unit has died, it was reported today.

The 42-year-old was one of two men seriously injured when they plunged 25ft from the same roof in Stockport, during separate incidents on Tuesday.

They were both taken to Wythenshawe Hospital and treated for head and body injuries, and police have confirmed the younger man has now passed away.

The second worker, 45, remains in serious but stable condition.

A joint police and Health and Safety Executive (HSE) probe is underway to establish the full circumstances.

Police and paramedics were called to the same site in Stockport – industrial units on Manchester Road in Heaton Norris – at 9.15am on Tuesday then again at 3.50pm.

Both men are believed to have fallen around 25ft through the same section of roof into the body of the unit they were working to demolish. The men were working to demolish two empty units next to the DIY store Wickes on the industrial estate. It is understood they will make way for a car park.

The first to fall, a worker aged 45, was taken to hospital in an ambulance. Hours later the North West Air Ambulance was scrambled to the scene and the 42-year-old was airlifted to hospital.

A joint investigation has now been launched between the police and the Health and Safety Executive to establish what happened. The HSE confirmed a joint investigation was underway with police.
